What is Bluesky and why are people leaving X to join the platform?

In recent weeks, following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris to become the next President of the United States, around one million users signed up for a new social media site in what appears to be a mass exodus from Elon Musk-owned platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Numerous users are leaving Musk’s X in search of another heavily monitored platform in response to warnings from the EU and anti-hate speech campaign groups regarding extremism and misleading information on the platform.

Now, as the social media platform gains popularity on Irish shores, what exactly is it? Why is it so popular? And who has already made the move?

Like Instagram and Facebook, Bluesky is a social media platform where users can interact with each other as much or as little as possible—like they do on X—by posting, replying to, and messaging each other on a vertical user interface.

It is believed that the site originally spun out of Twitter before the acquisition of the app by Elon Musk where he acted as CEO of the company until June 2023.
