The federal government will soon start accepting applications for amnesty from illegal immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said on July 17 that it would begin accepting applications from illegal immigrants on Aug. 19.
The new program, announced by President Joe Biden in June, enables illegal immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens to avoid deportation and remain in the United States while seeking legal status.
The program only applies to illegal immigrants who have lived in the country for at least 10 years as of June 17.
Government officials estimate that 500,000 illegal immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens are eligible for the program. About 50,000 children of these spouses are also eligible for the process.
